While many people know Kamala Harris as the current Vice President of the United States, running to potentially become the first female President of the United States, few know that she is actually an Asian-American. Her mother Shyamala Gopalan was born in India and immigrated to the United States to study nutrition and endocrinology.

Currently, Harris is running to become the President of the United States, and if elected, she would be the first Asian-American president of the United States, marking a huge leap in Asian Americans’ involvement in the United States government. This potential accomplishment would carve the path and inspire young Asian Americans to follow in a similar path.

Outside of her identity as an Asian-American, she is also African-American through her father. Additionally, becoming president would mean she would become the first female President of the United States, too. Another significant accomplishment that would be looked back upon for years to come.

She initially took the place of current President Joe Biden, who decided to suspend his campaign upon public worries about his age potentially impeding his performance as president. Harris received endorsements from many other significant figures in the Democratic party, allowing her to assume the place of Joe Biden at the forefront of the party. She also announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice president candidate.

Because of her multicultural background, she may receive more support from African-American voters and Asian-American voters, who previously had nobody to align themselves with in terms of identity. While it’s uncertain if this advantage is enough to bring her into the presidency, Americans will be able to see as the 2024 Presidential Election in November inches closer.
