The Intersection of Asian-American and LGBTQ+ Identities

Each person has their own unique identity, consisting of a combination of different identities. For instance, someone could be Asian-American while also being homosexual. These intersectionalities can sometimes be difficult because of contradictions and complexities.

In my example of being a homosexual Asian-American, these two identities can have contradicting aspects, as traditional Asian cultures often promote heteronormativity, conflicting with the idea of being heterosexual. Asian Americans who find themselves at the crossroads of honoring customs while seeking acceptance within their families and communities can feel stress and pressure because of their circumstances.

In some cases, LGBTQ+ individuals may conceal their identities, creating internal struggles as they navigate two sides to their lives. On the other hand, those who reveal their identity to their family may feel “othered” or pressured to change themselves to be more included in their cultural roots. This dilemma can create unnecessary stress and mental health issues that can negatively influence other aspects of one’s life.

Fortunately, raising awareness about one’s situation or seeking help from professionals may be advantageous to improve one’s situation. Having a deep talk with your family or teaching them about the LGBTQ+ side of your identity may eventually sway them to understand your position and support you. Even joining a community with similar identities as you can help you feel more welcome and accepted. Ultimately, advocacy, storytelling, and connection work can help break down barriers and create a more inclusive and welcoming society for all people, no matter what they identify as.
